Midpoint Object-Snap allows you to Snap to the midpoint of any line, polyline, arc or spline. Now select the line command and bring your cursor close to the endpoints of the geometries that you’ve made and you will notice that the endpoint will highlight in the green box as shown in the following image.Įven if the cursor is not exactly on the endpoint when the Endpoint Snap icon appears just click and it will snap exactly to the highlighted endpoint. It is the most basic and simple kind of Object-Snap which you would need to keep active most of the time.Īs an example, create a line, a polyline, an arc and a spline. With endpoint snap active AutoCAD will highlight the ends of simple geometries when you bring your cursor to those endpoints with an active command where point input is required. EndpointĮndpoints are the points where a curve like Line, Arc, Spline etc terminates. Now that you know what object snaps are let’s explore what these individual snap points are one by one. If your object snap is not highlighting the points then make sure that the Object-Snap icon is highlighted in blue as shown in the image above and your required snap icons are checked in the object snap menu. This helps in exactly snapping to the correct point which is essential to making drawings accurately. If object snap is active and you have an active command where you need to select a point the object snap function will kick in and it will highlight the checked points of the object snap menu. If you keep all the points active then, in a drawing with several points in close proximity AutoCAD might highlight a point that you don’t need and you may end up selecting a point that you don’t need. When required you can activate any specific point then make your drawing using that point and then deactivate it again. You don’t need to keep only these points active but it’s always advisable to go with the minimum number of snap points. Just in case you are wondering object snap is the status bar toggle option with snap points as shown in the following image.Īs you can see in the image above, I don’t keep all the object snap points active only a few of these points are checked and in my example, these points are Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Intersection and extension. In this article, I have discussed all of these object snap options and explained them in detail. These options not only let you make drawings precisely but they also speed up the drawing workflow. For example, the LINE command has as aliases L, meaning, if I want to activate the LINE command via the command line input, writing L and Pressing Enter is similar to writing LINE and Pressing Enter.Making drawings precisely is not possible without the use of AutoCAD object snaps. Most command have aliases or short names (or keyboard shortcuts). Scroll the wheel forward or backward allows to zoom out and in respectively and Clicking the wheel, holding and dragging allows to pan. In most CAD programs like in Draftsight, the Wheel is used to pan and zoom. Make sure the computer mouse you use has at least 2 buttons (left and right buttons) and the scroll wheel. The mouse is the most used input means you will ever use to communicate with the program. Still confusing right!? feel free to check this post about commands in AutoCAD. Typing LINE in the command line input and Pressing Enter allows to activate the line toolthat allows to draw a line.įor some commands, you still need to provide intermediary information to really have the CAD program do what you really need to, and the command line is often the indicated means you can use to do this. The command line input allows to interact with the program.
